Lately, I’ve been feeling… lonely.

And honestly, I hesitated to even write that. I’m surrounded by people. I go to events, run a business, lead wellness programs, and speak with clients daily. From the outside looking in, it probably seems like I’m thriving. Like I’m fulfilled, and most often I am…

But something inside me has felt… off. Quiet. Hollow.

And maybe, just maybe, you’ve felt that way too?

Why does loneliness show up, especially when life is full?

I’ve been sitting with this question a lot lately. And I think part of the answer is this: when you’ve spent years doing the inner work—healing, evolving, growing—surface-level conversations no longer satisfy your soul.

You begin to crave something deeper.

You want connection that feels nourishing, not just noisy.

You want presence. Real presence.

It’s not enough anymore to talk about the weather or who wore what, or what traffic was like on the way in. You want to know what someone’s afraid of. What they’re dreaming of. What they’re wrestling with in the quiet corners of their mind. At least I do!

Have you ever been in a crowded room and still felt completely alone?

I have. And I don’t think I’m alone in that experience.

Why does it feel more intense in the second half of life?

I think many of us, especially as we move through our 40s, 50s, and beyond, begin to feel this void more deeply. The kids grow up. The pace shifts. All the energy we once funneled into carpool lines, sports practices, late-night homework checks, and snack prep… it slows down. Or stops.

And then the silence sets in.

We look around and wonder:

Where am I needed now?

Who am I outside of being a caregiver or a provider?

What relationships have I nurtured beyond the walls of family and work?

Sometimes, the answer is hard to swallow.

Even the ones who “have it all” feel lonely.

We hear about celebrities, athletes, or high-achieving leaders who seem to be surrounded by people and success… yet they struggle deeply. Some tragically take their own lives.

And that tells us something important:

Loneliness isn’t about proximity. It’s about connection. It’s about being seen, known, and emotionally met.

So I find myself wondering (and maybe you can reflect with me):

  • Are we really showing up for the people in our lives in the ways they need?

  • Have we unintentionally let adult friendships slide while raising children or building careers?

  • Are we over-functioning for others while under-asking for support ourselves?

  • And have we forgotten how to create and nurture the kind of connection we now realize we crave?

These aren’t accusations. They’re invitations!

Let’s get honest about what we need. There’s no one “right” way to live, connect, or build relationships. But I believe we need to normalize this conversation. We need to make it okay to say, “I’m lonely,” without shame or self-judgment.

We need to stop believing that busyness automatically equals belonging, because you can fill your calendar and still feel empty. You can succeed wildly and still ache quietly. You can be surrounded and still feel unseen.

You have probably heard: “We are born alone, and we will die alone.” But… everything in between… we don’t have to do alone.

So here I am, reminding you, and myself, that it’s okay to want more. It’s okay to desire deep, soul-stirring conversations. It’s okay to outgrow small talk. It’s okay to feel lonely, even when your life looks full.

Maybe today, instead of pushing through the feeling, we sit with it.

We ask:

  • Who have I been meaning to reach out to?

  • Where can I create more space for real conversations?

  • When was the last time I let someone really see me?

Let’s stop waiting for the loneliness to pass. Let’s get curious about what it’s trying to teach us. Let’s reconnect with others and with ourselves.

You’re not alone in this, my friend. Not even close. Let’s make this middle part —the space between birth and death —one we do together.

With an open heart,

Dr. Anna Marie
